Sensory Science Centre starts well

Sensory Science Centre starts well

Since the set up earlier in the year of the new Sensory Science Centre at the University of Reading, MMR is delighted to announce that business levels have been way ahead of target and that many clients have been making use of the excellent facilities and experience on offer from the team.

The expert sensory panel is managed by Phiala Mehring and all the locally-based panel members have been trained to evaluate the taste and other sensory qualities of food and drinks as well as other products.

MMR conducts sensory evaluation on behalf of clients to help them reformulate by using better, healthier or lower cost ingredients. Some projects will involve competitive product benchmarking too, and the larger projects combine consumer research elements (to provide the information on what is liked) with the expert sensory evaluation (to understand the sensory drivers). Both datasets can then be combined and the data segmented to create powerful predictive models for new prototypes.  This avoids the need for endless rounds of consumer research. Many MMR clients are regular users of this process - which we call SensoHedonicTM Optimisation. It's one of the most cost-effective and efficient ways of optimising a product!   Here's a short description, and here's a case study.
